Highway Shield swept IL, IN and OH. What shippers in the Midwest should expect at the dock

The second Highway Shield wave focused on freight corridors in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa and Ohio: more time at the roadside, but no reason to worry about a legal truck.

Highway Shield swept IL, IN and OH. What shippers in the Midwest should expect at the dock

What the agencies described, and what we will not dress up

Westbound on I-80 at a weigh station, the line is longer than it was in June. That is the piece of Operation Highway Shield a Chicago shipper actually feels: minutes, not a manifesto. The freight still has to clear the scale to reach the dock.

On August 4, 2026 Secretary Duffy and DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin announced preliminary results from a second Highway Shield wave. The stated targets were drivers the agencies call unqualified to operate CMVs, working Midwest freight corridors that include Illinois, Indiana, Iowa and Ohio. A joint DOT and DHS effort means a single stop can cover both CMV qualification and immigration status.

The headline number in the title is an enforcement tally, not a census of the industry. We will not inflate or launder those numbers, and we will not copy the newsroom adjectives into a shipper email. For the official count and categories, use the newsroom link below and confirm on FMCSA.gov.

This is our home turf, and Rolling Meadows sits inside that map. A sweep does not rewrite MC# {{MC}} or USDOT# {{USDOT}}, and it does not turn a legal asset-based truck into a different product. It can slow a scale lane, and it can pull an unqualified driver off a corridor we run too.

What a Chicago-area shipper actually notices

More inspections can mean longer waits at weigh stations and more "where is my truck" calls. They can also mean fewer mystery carriers covering loads they should never have taken. Both outcomes happen on the same highway, and only one of them is worth wanting on purpose.

If you want fewer mystery carriers at the dock, tender to a named MC with a packet, not to a network of cell phones.

Royser: MC# {{MC}}, USDOT# {{USDOT}}, Rolling Meadows. The Chicago region page is the landing page for dry van lanes around our base. Iowa is a lane we will quote when the empty fits; send the freight rather than asking whether a campaign map "covers" it.

Will your Illinois pickup run late because of this? Only if that particular truck is held. We quote against real empties, not a campaign map. If you want the packet that matches the number on the door, it is on the broker packet page: W-9, COI, authority, the same files we always send.

How we approach these lanes

We do not market enforcement sweeps. We run legal drivers and legal logs. If a partner or a new hire cannot clear the file, they do not get the keys. It is dull, and dull is how you keep an appointment in Joliet.

We will not claim to be part of Highway Shield, and we will not tell you a legal truck is "safer this week" because a press release landed. What we will do is keep the same CDL, Clearinghouse and ELD file we already maintain, and tell you if a specific truck is sitting at a scale.

Dispatch is +1 (224) 877-0350 for the empty we actually have. Drivers who want a seat can start at Open seats. We are a for-hire carrier, not a government contractor on this sweep, and we will keep saying so if anyone asks.

Short glossary

The jargon, in the order it showed up — no extra theory.

Highway Shield
A joint USDOT and DHS enforcement campaign centered on CMV driver qualification along freight corridors; its second wave named Illinois, Indiana, Iowa and Ohio.
Scale
A weigh station or inspection site. Midwest I-80, I-55 and I-94 traffic passes through them, and a sweep lengthens the line well before it affects a tariff.

FAQ

Will my Illinois pickup run late because of this?

Only if that particular truck is held. We quote against real empties, not a campaign map, and we will tell you if a scale stop is the reason.

Are you a government contractor on this sweep?

No, we are a for-hire carrier. A joint DOT and DHS operation does not put our trucks on a federal roster.

Do you haul in the four named states?

We are based in the Chicago area and cover all 48 states, so Illinois, Indiana, Iowa and Ohio are all lanes we can quote. Send origin, destination and commodity.

Where is the official tally?

The FMCSA newsroom original is linked below. We will not restate or inflate the headline number; use the agency's categories if you need the count.
