FMCSA removed five more ELDs. Replace them by October 6, and even if yours is registered, check the list
On August 6, 2026 FMCSA revoked five ELDs. Carriers have until October 6 to swap them, and after that date a revoked unit counts as having no ELD at all.

Five identifiers, not five brand slogans
In the shop, the box art is not what you check first. Open the device menu and read the identifier (MRS255, HRS169, HIG385, TRS263, SPARK6), then compare it with FMCSA's registered list. Brand names change; identifiers are what the bulletin actually revoked.
On August 6, 2026 FMCSA Administrator Derek D. Barrs announced that these devices failed the minimum technical requirements in 49 CFR Part 395, Appendix A to Subpart B. The bulletin names five units. If you run a mixed fleet or are about to take on a lease, go by the identifiers and not by a caption in an ad.
- UZB2USA INC: Moonlight ELD, model MRS, identifier MRS255
- HGRS: HGRS ELD, model HGR, identifier HRS169
- Highest ELD: model HIG4ES, identifier HIG385
- Truckford ELD: model TRS, identifier TRS263
- Spark Technologies Inc.: Sparkle ELD, model PT40SIM, identifier SPARK6
A vendor that fixes the deficiencies can ask FMCSA to relist the device. The agency still tells carriers not to count on that. Put October 6, 2026 on your calendar and check eld.fmcsa.dot.gov/List before buying a replacement; it is the same list we describe in the ELD vetting overhaul article.
FMCSA says it will email the industry, but do not wait for a message that may land in spam. Read the bulletin and the live list on FMCSA.gov yourself; this article is a plain-language reading of the bulletin and not a substitute for it.
What to do this week if your identifier matches
Read the ELD identifier in the device menu and ignore the box art. If it matches a revoked ID, set up a paper or software backup, stop relying on the unit for official logs and order a registered replacement. Until October 6 inspectors are told to accept those backup logs instead of writing "no RODS" or "not a registered ELD."
Compare the sticker and the login, not the marketing name in an ad. After October 6, "the vendor says they are fixing it" will not help you at the scale.
From October 6, 2026, running a revoked unit counts as having no ELD. The violation is 395.8(a)(1), and the driver can go out of service under CVSA criteria. That is how a $200 clone turns into a missed pickup.
No shipper rate changes because of this, but a truck with the wrong box can sit idle. If you are a broker tendering to a named MC, ask whether the truck's logger is on the live list, especially for a lease-on or a carrier you have not used before. If you are the one bringing the box, read our owner-operator terms.
What Royser does, and how we would react to a change
We run only registered devices and treat the list as something that can change. If a device we use were ever revoked, this article would get a date and a replacement plan the same day.
We will not dispatch a partner or a new lease whose identifier matches MRS255, HRS169, HIG385, TRS263 or SPARK6 once we have seen it. We check the identifier before the truck goes out, and we say no when the box is on the revoked list.
Owner-operators leasing on: your logging device is part of the truck file, and dispatch and safety will ask about it before you get a load. Call +1 (224) 877-0350 if you want that talk before buying a replacement, or start at Open seats if you prefer a company seat with the equipment already in the cab.
Short glossary
The jargon, in the order it showed up — no extra theory.
- ELD
- Electronic Logging Device, the unit that records hours of service. Most interstate property carriers must use a device from FMCSA's registered list.
- Registered list
- FMCSA's public roster of ELDs that may be used to meet the mandate. Revoked devices are taken off it.
- RODS
- Record of duty status, meaning the log. "No RODS" is the 395.8(a)(1) violation inspectors write once the grace period has ended.

FAQ
Is a registered brand like ours on this revocation list?
Not in the August 6 bulletin. If you hear a rumor, recheck eld.fmcsa.dot.gov/List, since the live list is what counts.
Can I leave a revoked ELD on as a backup screen?
Until October 6, inspectors may use the display as a backup while you produce paper or software logs. After that date a revoked device counts as no ELD.
Who pays for the replacement?
The motor carrier. A vendor's failure does not excuse the USDOT number on the door.
Does this change a shipper rate?
No. It can leave a truck idle if it bought a $200 clone, which is a coverage problem and not a new linehaul number.
